How to Improve Students’ Reading Ability in Primary School Abstract Reading teaching in primary school is of great significance, and also an important approach of learning English well.However,in the real teaching practice, English reading hasn’t been paid much attention to. Few teachers in primary school focus on it.Consequently,students’ reading abilities are not well trained. I think it’s necessary to teach some reading skills and provide some reading materials for students in primary school. Lay the foundation for the further English learning. Here I introduce some reading skills which help students how to read.1.Shared reading; 2.KWL reading; 3.Skimming; 4.Scanning; 5.Guess and reading(5.1 Context understanding 5.2Word formation) 6.Close reading; Besides choosing the reading materials is also very important for students in primary school. The materials should close to students’ life and be not too difficulty .Only this kind of materials may stimulate students’ interests of reading English. We teachers should encourage students to read more after class to accumulate their vocabulary .What’s more, reading has a close connection with writing. The more you read, the easier the writing will be. The English Curriculum Standards promulgated in 2001 has set forth explicit goals of reading in primary school. The main aims of reading teaching in primary school is to cultivate students’ reading interest, enable them to understand the easy English stories or magazines and grasp certain reading strategies. We teachers should make use of some pictures, videos and establish the real environment of English learning to let students perceive the text ,thus to rouse their reading interest or curiosity.
