[英语考试]TOEFL Integrated Writing
Furthermore, the lecturer explains that even if it is true that the public is reading fewer books and watching more television and films instead, it does not necessarily mean that culture is in decline. Television and film are simply modern forms of cutural expression that are also intellectually stimulating and directly relevant to contemporary life. Finally, the lecturer admits a decline in audience and support of literature in todays society, but she attributes it to the authors themselves, who have alienated themselves from the reading public by using overly complex language. The reading, however, blames the lowering standards of the public for the declining interest in reading great works of literature. TPO5之Chaco Canyon Intro The professor evaluated three competing theories of how Chaco great houses were used presented in the passage. He claimed that none of the arguments is convincing. First, the professor admitted that the great houses look like later native American apartment buildings from the outside. He also pointed out that the inside of the great houses cast serious doubt on the idea that many people live there. He argued that there was not enough fire places inside the Chaco great houses, which was indispensable for families to live in and do their daily cooking. Second, the professor claimed that although it might sound plausible that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies, it might also be unsupported by evidence. Because it required a large number of containers, which was not found yet. Besides, no spoilt grain maize was found, indicating that it couldnt be used as storage for food supplies. Finally, the professor reminded that large quantities of materials, beside the broken pots, have been uncovered, including sand, stone and even construction tools, indicating that the great houses were not necessarily used for ceremony. Those broken pots might just be regarded as regular trash, which construction workers used for cooking meals
