The suspension strut consists of a coil spring combined with a twin-tube gas-filled shock absorber. Integrated into the front axle is a tubular anti-roll bar which helps to control the body tilt angle. Reduced roll when cornering makes the car easier to control and has a positive effect on both comfort and safety. Rubber mounts of generous size ensure refinement by keeping vibration, shake and wheel movement over rough roads away from the car’s occupants as far as possible. The front axle geometry uses slight negative camber for the front wheels, that is to say they lean inwards slightly. When accelerating and braking, this generates forces which help to keep the car on a stable course, rather like a human being walking with the legs well apart in order to obtain a firmer footing. The suspension geometry maintains this negative camber when cornering too. The driver senses this stabilising force when cornering as a self-centering effect in the steering, which tends to move the wheels back to the straight-ahead position after they have been turned. To save weight, all four links are aluminium forgings and many other components are made from aluminium too, for instance the centres of the rubber mounts.
