William Shakespeare (1564-1616) Comments: Widely regarded as the greatest writer in English Literature. Playwright, poet 1）Life Born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. At the age of 7, he was sent to the local grammar school. At the age of 14, his father fell into debt. So Shakespeare left school. He was forced to leave his hometown for London. He arrived in London in 1586 or 1587, when the drama was rapidly gaining popularity among the people. He was said to have kept horses for the gentlemen outside the play-houses. He must have tried many odd jobs and gone through many hardships He became an actor, playing minor roles. He started writing plays, at the rate of about two a year. Shakespeare died on April 23, the anniversary of his birth, in 1616. Upon his death, Ben Johnson wrote: …Soul of the Age! The applause! Delight! The wonder of our stage!
