THE ADSORPTION OF NITROGEN BY BROMINATED CHARCOAL ABSTRACT *. I he adsorption of nitrogen has been measured a t 78 I. for two charcoals 6 which have been brominated and heat-treated a t a variety of temperatures. I n 1 / no instance did removal of the sorbed bromine by heat-treatment bring about 4 2 activation of the charcoal. The densities of bromine sorbed by charcoal have / 2 been calculated from the volumes of nitrogen sorbed by charcoal containing 0 n varying an~ountsof residual bromine. In all cases, the density of sorbed o bromine was found t o be less than that of solid bromine. B I L V INTRODUCTION I N In ail earlier paper (4), experimental work was presented on the adsorptiorl U I of ilitrogerl by a series of brominated graphites and by one brominated carboil G G black. It was shown that for all the carbons, the surface area as measured by N nitrogen adsorption gradually increased as bromine was removed. However, O Y
