11 Abstract
12 An alternative approach is presented to approximate the uncertainty in CO , latent heat and
2
13 sensible heat fluxes from eddy-covariance measurements. The nocturnal uncertainty estimates
14 tend to be smaller for the alternate approach due to differences in the treatment of the submeso
15 motions. For homogeneous conditions, the relative flux uncertainty is approximately the same
16 during the day and night, possibly due to offsetting effects. The daytime relative uncertainty is
17 half as large at a simple maize site (20%) compared to more complex forest sites (40%) possibly
18 due to the more homogeneous vegetation, flat terrain and lower measurement height. Modest
19 surface heterogeneity appears to approximately double the relative flux uncertainty. Monte
20 Carlo simulations using the hourly flux uncertainties show that the relative uncertainty of the
21 cumulative annual CO flux is only 2%, indicating that on annual timescales, the uncertainty as-
2
22 sociated with random errors is probably small compared to other potential sources of systematic
23 error.
