EMC Avamar October 2009 * * Note to Presenter: For more details on this EMC Proven Solution, go to this path on Powerlink: Solutions Application Solutions VMware ESX Backup, Recovery, and Archiving [subsections]. This EMC Proven Solution allows you to offload the overhead of the backup process to a designated proxy server while providing for full and more granular backup/restore options at the virtual machine level—that is, recoverable VM images which, in some modes, enable the recovery of individual files. A script initiates a snap or freeze of the disk subsystems for a particular VM to enable you to copy the data contained in a file format called VMDK where VMware stores the VM image. Once copied to disk, files can be mounted to the proxy servers and then backed up to Avamar as deduplicated data. Finally, after successfully copied, the data is removed from the proxy server and the snap or freeze is released. With this solution, you can backup VMware ESX servers with minimal impact to network resources and business processes to achieve zero downtime for backups. In this scenario, Avamar works with EMC CLARiiON CX4, Replication Manager, and SnapView to offload the backup from the server. As always, Avamar… Reduces daily network impact by up to 95 percent and impact on clients by nearly 90 percent Delivers the same level of backup service across the infrastructure, helping meet service level agreements EMC Avamar October 2009 * Avamar Data Transport enables Avamar backup data to be exported to tape in deduplicated format for long-term storage. This means significant savings in tape media and in the total cost of offsite storage because fewer tapes are required. Here’s how it works… Avamar backs up clients as usual to the Avamar server. Then, backup data is replicated as defined by user policy to Avamar Data Transport replica nodes that reside as guests on VMware ESX servers. Note that having a VMware ESX server is a requirement for the solution. From there, A
