Its applications include: electronic policeman, electronic toll collection system, traffic flow control, parking lot management, stolen vehicle inquiry, etc. It has a broad market prospects and commercial value. The License Plate Recognition System plays a pivotal role in the Intelligent Transportation System. The License Plate Recognition System based on MATLAB needs to recognize the license plate and it involves image processing, artificial neural networks, pattern recognition technology and some other fields. This article introduces the current research situation, the development trend of domestic and foreign license plate recognition system and selects the appropriate algorithms combined with each module of the license plate recognition system. We use the MATLAB software simulator and achieve good effects of four modules which are the image preprocessing, license plate location, license plate character segmentation and license plate character recognition. The simulation result shows that this license plate recognition system designed basically achieved the function of the license plate recognition, license plate location, character segmentation and character recognition. In this study, a
