Hot dip galvanized dual phase (DP) steel has
been widely used as automobile components due to
its high strength and anti-corrosion ability. However,
the addition of alloy element, Mn, caused the selective
oxidation of the steel. This selective oxidation of the
steel retarded the diffusion between steel and zinc bath
leading to the formation of bare spot. In this study,
we investigated the causal relationship between the
150~200 nm annealing oxidation on the steel surface and the bare
MnO MnO spot formation. Results showed that there was a MnO
oxide, with 150~200nm in diameter, formed on the bare
spot surface instead of zinc. The MnO was reduced due
MnO to thermite reaction leading to the formation of zinc or
MnO Zn-Fe phases. The formation of bare spot defect of DP
steel was caused by the formation of MnO oxide on
Fe2(Al,Zn)5 the steel surface that inhibited the formation of Fe2(Al,
Zn)5 intermetallic layer.
