Small changes in decibel levels can have appreciable effects on noise perception. Increasing noise by 10 dB(A) is the same as doubling the noise. A decrease of 3 dB(A) is the same as moving the receiver twice the distance from the source of the noise. Noise walls are a popular solution to roadway noise, especially in urban areas, but: 1) They are expensive, costing up to $25,000 to $50,000/ affected home. 2) They won’t work if a home or business is located within the line-of-sight of the roadway. 3) They do not treat the noise at its source, so the generation of the noise remains. HMA pavement surfaces can substantially reduce tire noise up to 10 dB(A). Remember that by reducing the noise level by 10 dB(A) reduces the perceived noise by half.
