Livable andEcologicalTheoryof Chinese ClassicalGardens and the Planning of Modern Eco -residentialCommunityWEI Sheng -lin ，XU Meng -ying ，ZHANG HuiGold Mantis School of Architecture and Urban Environment，Soochow University，Suzhou，Jiangsu 215123，ChinaAbstract With some modern communities in Suzhou as the example，this paper mainly expounded the application of the artistic techniques of land-scapes in the planning of modern landscape-type eco-residential communities according to the classical livable and ecological theory in Yuan Ye ( an ancient book of garden design in China) ． It was learnt that there were many inner links between the livable and ecological theory of classical Chi- nese gardens and the planning of modern eco-residential communities． Ecological community is a new-type inhabitation model which represents the future development direction of dwelling construction in China and the main type of ecological communities． Classical Suzhou-style gardens are the representation of gardens in southern Yangtze River as well as the classical livable environment in China． Both of the above two residential models emphasize the harmonious unification between human and nature as well as the sustainable development，and lay their cores on the livability and the harmony with the nature．Key words Classical gardens，Livability，Environment，Modern eco-residential communities，Planning and designEco-community is a new style of human settlement wherehuman beings and nature harmoniously coexist and sustainably develop，the principal development direction of residence con- struction in the 21st century［1］． The construction of eco-commu- nity is to build a living environment that is natural，harmonious， healthy and comfortable［2］． Eco-residential community is one of the basic eco-community types，with its leading features of sus- tainable development and harmonious unification of human and nature，which emphasizes the mutual integration of natural en- vironment and residential co
