Unit Ten ;Teaching Objectives;Teaching Emphases ;Content ;TEXT IPR and Economic Growth; With the swift and violent development of the knowledge economy, the countries all over the world are aware of the tremendous influence of the intellectual property rights to their economic development. The information and original expressions of creative individuals is known as intellectual property (IP). The earliest use of the term “intellectual property” was in October, 1845, in a patent case, Justice Charls L. Woodbury wrote, “only in this way can we protect intellectual property, the labors of the mind, production and interests as much a man’s own…as the wheat he cultivates, or the flocks he rears.” The term’s widespread popularity is a much more modern phenomenon. It was very uncommon until the 1967 establishment of the World Intellectual Property Organization, which actively promote the term. Still it was rarely used without scare quotes until 1980. ; The key forms of intellectual property are patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. Because intellectual property shares many of the characteristics of real and personal property, associated rights permit intellectual property to be treated as an asset that can be bought, sold, licensed, or even given away at no cost. Countries in the world such as the United States, Japan, and the Netherlands protect inventions; literary and artistic works; and symbols, images, names, and designs used in commerce, all of this are in the range of intellectual property rights.
