General Hospitals in China in 2014 WWW.IBISWORLD.COM.CN General Hospitals in China May 2013 4 Industry Performance Executive Summary The General Hospitals industry in China has developed at a stable rate in recent years, due to Chinas large population base and the increasingly affluent urban and rural residents benefiting from Chinas rapid GDP growth. The level of industry revenue volatility is low due to relatively steady hospital visitor numbers from year to year. General hospitals generated over 76.0% of the total hospital revenue in China in 2011, and about 57.5% of the total revenue in Chinas healthcare sector. Industry profitability is also low as most general hospitals are under government control or management and generally do not operate to maximize profits. Industry profit is estimated at 3.3% of industry revenue in 2013. Although barriers to entry in this industry are high, more private capital is entering the industry through medical mechanism reforms. This is also expected to improve hospital productivity, efficiency and profit levels in future years. ACMR-IBISWorld estimates that industry revenue will total $195.4 billion by the end of 2013, up 10.9% from 2012. Over the past five years, industry revenue has been increasing at an average annualized rate of 15.7%. In the next five years, industry revenue is forecast to grow 8.2% annually on average to reach $290.4 billion by 2018. This steady growth will mainly come from further medical system reform. Key External Drivers The key sensitivities affecting the performance of the General Hospitals industry include: Age Group (65+) The aging population is an important demand determinant for this industry. The number of people in China over 65 years old was about 113 million in 2009, and accounted for 9.7% of the total population; the number of people of 60 years old was 169 million or 14.5% of the population.
