Often those discussing the elite class in Taiwan’s colonial period have chiefly focused on upper-class Taiwanese and placed emphasis on how changes in education and social-cultural factors cultivated the isle’s elite. Basically that meant that discussions focused on Du Shu Ren, or the intellectuals who passed the imperial examinations. Studies of this period are predominately on the Taiwan elite, particularly in regard to economic and financial concerns. But the personal backgrounds and developments of Japanese elites in Taiwan are seldom discussed, thus leaving a missing piece in the Formosa jigsaw puzzle of the class structure. To better appreciate the Japanese elites who contributed to Taiwan society during its Japanese that started in 1895, this paper focuses on the Book of Taiwan th People, from the 18 year of the Showa reign. Among the 2,269 Japanese elites recorded in the book, 1,183 had working experience in Japan before coming to Taiwan. This elite included 21 of them who had fought in oversea wars, and 82 of the group had previously been to China. Another 108 had had foreign experiences outside of China and Japan. From the records contained in the Book we know that a large ratio of the Japanese elites had already been exposed to multi-cultural experiences. This paper, which focuses on the Book of Taiwan People, explores the activities, residences and movements of this Japanese Elite during Taiwan’s colonial period in Japan, C
