What do the trends mean? Extreme Weather: Increased extreme heat events and reduced cooling overnight Increased intense, localized storms and flooding Increased localized drought and fires Changing ecosystems: Earlier ice out which may affect both recreational ice fishing in the winter, lake temperature year-round, and stress cold-water fish Earlier flowering and longer growing season which may allow for increased harvests for farmers, but also higher production of pollen for allergy sufferers Sources: (Seeley, 2012; National Wildlife Federation, 2010) * This image from the National Arbor Day Foundation compares two maps of plant hardiness zones (or what types of plants will survive well and where). From 1990 to 2006, Minnesota has moved from predominantly zone 3 in the central and northern part of the state and zone 4 in the southern part of the state, to predominantly zone 4 across the state, with zone 5 in the far southern part of the state. [What plants we used to plant; what plants can we plant now.] Sources: (National Wildlife Federation, 2010) * The next section will generally introduce the relationship between climate change and air quality, and then go into three major air pollutants that are likely to be affected by climate changes. * One study estimates that each one degree Celsius (1.8°F) increase in temperature would cause about 1,000 additional deaths in the US associated with air pollution. Source: (Jacobson, 2008) * Climate change may affect exposures to air pollutants by: Creating both more windiness and more air stagnation events; on calm days with stagnant air, pollutants stick around as smog and create poor air quality Increased temperatures can Increase pollution from fossil fuel combustion to meet electricity demand for increased air conditioner use Increase the emission of pollutants called volatile organic compounds from plants and vegetation that are the raw ingredients for the formation of ozone Increase formation of ground-lev
