China May, 2009 Acknowledgements This thesis originates from four years’ study at School of Foreign Languages at Qujing Normal University. Upon the completion of this thesis, I would like to express my great and heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to this thesis either directly or indirectly. My greatest debt goes to my supervisor Professor Zhang Quan for his insightful suggestions that contribute to the framework of this thesis. Abstract It is generally recognized that language and culture are closely associated. As a unique kind of Chinese language, the Chinese enigmatic folk simile is an indispensable part of Chinese language and culture. It is a language that was widely spoken by laboring and working Chinese people and used to express their thoughts and sentiments during the long-time practice in their lives.
