Abs tract: In th is paper, a m ethod is proposed for u sing accumu lated du ct ility coeffic ien t to evalua te the requ ired
deform ation cap ac ity o f reinforced concrete p ilot i bu ild ings. Based on the relation sh ip o f energy con servat ion during
a m ajor earthqu ake, a form u la is dedu ced for calcu lating the requ ired deform a tion capacity o f the soft-first story. In
order to affirm the ca lculat ion results, an elasto-p last ic ana lysisw as carried out for a mu lt-i degree of freedom system
subjected to som e actu al earthqu ake g round m otion s. T he ca lculat ion results from the formu la w ere comp ared w ith
the analysis results. T he conclu sions show th at the proposed formu la can w e ll and safe ly pred ict the requ ired de-
fo rm ation cap acity of the p ilot i bu ildings.
