SPT6 – Version 1.07 (22/02/13) Guidance Notes for Applicants Skin Piercing and Tattooing Licence Introduction This guidance is provided for your information only and is not prepared as a substitute for any independent legal advice. A skin piercing and tattooing licence is required for the carrying on of a business involving the following activities; acupuncture, cosmetic body piercing, electrolysis and tattooing. Regulated health care professionals are exempt from applying for this type of licence. If an individual is employed and the employer has a licence for the carrying on of the business then the individual can work under the employer’s licence. If the individual carrying out the act of skin piercing or tattooing is self employed they should have their own licence. Skin Piercing and Tattooing can be carried out from premises (where the customers visits the business) or on a mobile basis (where the business travels to the customer). There is also the option to operate using a combination of premises and mobile trading but full details must be provided on the application form. If more than one premises are in use, a Notice (SPT2) must be displayed at each premises and a Certificate of Compliance (SPT3) must be completed for each premises. Please note that you may require the relevant planning permission in addition to a licence to operate a business providing Skin Piercing and Tattooing. Application Application fees are non-refundable and are currently set at: ￡100 for mobile and single premise businesses. Each additional premise is charged at ￡50.
