SIMPSON COUNTY SCHOOLS BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN Adopted by the Simpson County Board of Education October 17, 1996. Revised and approved September 28, 2004. BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Exposure Control Plan is to eliminate or minimize District employees occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens refer most commonly, in the school setting, to: * Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) * Human Immunodefiency Virus (HIV) The most common modes of transmission in the school setting include: * needlesticks * sharps injuries such as cuts from broken glass * mucous membrane contact * nosebleed tooth extraction The intent of OSHA standards is to minimize occupational exposure to these and any other applicable hazards that can occur in the school setting. In general, universal precautions shall be observed to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Under circumstances in which differentiation between body fluid types is difficult or impossible, all body fluids are considered potentially infectious materials. In essence: 1. Treat all blood and body fluids as being potentially infectious. 2. Use an appropriate barrier between any cuts or body spills, preferably gloves. 3. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm running water before and after providing first aid or toileting students. 4. Contaminated needles and other contaminated sharp instruments are not to be bent, broken, sharpened, or recapped. 5. Contaminated reusable sharp instruments are to be placed in appropriate containers. These containers are: puncture resistant, labeled and/or color-coded, and leakproof on the sides and bottoms. I. DEFINITIONS 1. Biohazard - A condition or agent that constitutes a threat to human beings. 2. Blood - Human blood, blood component. Example: plasma and products made from human blood. 3. Bloodborne Pathogens - Pathogenic microorganisms present in human blo
