This short novel tells a story about a woman, Emily, who was born in a decline noble family. The style of the novel is suspenseful and horrific. The narrative technique of Faulkner in this novel is superb. This paper mainly discusses the narrative techniques in three parts. The first part primarily illustrates the narrative theory from three aspects the definition of narratology, the history of development of narratology and the narrative time and narrative context. The second part simply introduces the short novel, A Rose for Emily, and its author. At first, the main idea and the theme are being discussed and then the typical narrative techniques are simply explored. The last part analyses the narrative techniques of A Rose for Emily in detail also from three aspects. The first aspect discussed is the time and space order the dislocation of narrative order and montage technique. The second aspect is the author’s unique narrative perspective. The paper discusses the changing narrative perspective from the point of narrator’s perspective and reflector-character’s perspective. The last aspect is the gothic style. The theme, portrait, scene, and plot of A Rose for Emily are all typical gothic style. The gothic style plays an important role in expressing the character and the theme.
