Since 1999, data on antibiotic resistance in Europe are available from the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS). This surveillance has repeatedly shown large inter-country variations in the percentage of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. In 2007, the percentage of – for example – methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) – the most common single resistant bacteria responsible for healthcare-associated infections varies from less than 1% (in 2 Member States) to more than 25% (in 10 Member States). This means that when a doctor in these countries is treating a patient whose blood is infected with Staphylococcus aureus, there is a one in four probability (or more) that the bacteria will not respond to the antibiotic commonly given to treat this type of infection. Comparison over time with data from 2002 – the year following adoption of Council Recommendation (2002/77/EC) – the antimicrobial resistance situation has not changed much. For MRSA, it has actually become worse in many countries – this includes including countries that traditionally had low resistance. Data from the European dedicated surveillance system on antimicrobial consumption ESAC show a 3-fold difference between the Member State with the highest antibiotic consumption and the country with the lowest antibiotic consumption. ecdc.europa.eu Professor Karl Ekdahl, Helsinki, 9 December European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control Combating Communicable Diseases in Northern Europe Expanded Europe – the Five Freedoms in the EU 1.
