Diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) Kai-Chun Fan Introduction AIH is a progressive inflammatory hepatitis of unknown etiology that is responsive to immunosuppressive therapy. It is characterized by the presence of interface hepatitis and portal plasma cell infiltration on histologic examination , hypergammaglobulinemia and autoantibodies. Patients are frequently asymptomatic (34%). An acute onset of illness is common(40%). The fulminant presentation is possible.
