AbstractVoiceoverInternetProtocol(VoIP)isanincreasinglysignificantInternetapplication today.Comparedwithtraditionaltelephones,itsfundamentalbenefitisobvious:First,it facilitatesthecreationofnewservicesthatcombinevoicecommunicationwithother mediaanddataapplicationssuchasvideocall,webbrowsing,andfilesharing.Secondly, withthehelpofvoicecodingandcompressiontechnology,VoIPcansavemore bandwidth and dramaticallyimprovebandwidth efficiencyin packet-switched networks.However，several technical problems exist in this application: 1) unacceptablevoicedelayin thepresenceof coexistingwith otherapplications，2)low voicecapacitycaused bytheinherentcharacteristicofWLANandheavypacketheadersfromupperlayers.Sinceatypicalvoicestreamrequireslessthan10kb/s，an802.11WLANoperatedat11Mb/s could theoreticallysupport hundreds ofVoIPsessions. However，inactuality，the numberofvoicestreamsthatcanbesupportedsimultaneouslyisfarlessthanthis theoretical value.To address theseproblems，in this paper wepropose and studyacross-layer schemethatcanadvancethevoicecapacityinWLANsignificantly.Wefirstlyintroduceseveral keytechnologiesofVoIPoverWLAN,andespeciallyintroducethe802.11and802.11e protocol, to providebackgroundknowledge for this paper.Moreover,weanalyzedseveralshortcomingsincurrentVoIPapplications,and studiedthescenariothatallnodesofaWLANhaveanequalandfixedPHYrate.Based onthisscenario,weproposedseveralschemestoadvancesystemcapacityofVoIPWLAN andminimizetimedalayforvoicepackets(STXOPschemeandTTXOPscheme).And then,weproposedtwoschemesbasedonthetechnologyofVoiceActivityDetection.Intheproposedscheme，connection-orientedisguaranteed，whichmeansinthisschemeeveryvoicestreamhasafixedbandwidth.Inaddition，withtheinteractionwith application layer，the delayof voicepackets canreach its minimum value.We also show theperformanceanalysisandsimulationofourproposedschemeinvariousPHYratesandover various voice codecs.Atlast,weanalyzedtheschemesweproposedthroughsimulation,andshowedthesimulationresultsofnetworkcapacity,CFPduati
