Julee Shen Xinsong Middle School World Water Day March 22nd Why do we have World Water Day? Answer some questions: 1)How much of the earth is covered by water? Two-thirds of the earth is covered by water. H2O. Three forms. They are liquid (water), solid (ice) and gas (steam). 2)What’s the scientific symbol for water? 3)How many forms of water are there? It runs into the Huangpu River, then goes to a water treatment works. It comes into our flats through the pipes under the street. 5)How long could we live without water? 6)How does water come into your flat? World Water Day World Water Day is on 22 March each year. The day was decided by the United Nations in 1992. Its goal is to get citizens and governments thinking about one of our most precious resources. The theme of the year 2004 is “Water and Disasters”. Water is necessary for all life on Earth, but is also dangerous. Other water-related disasters, such as hurricanes and droughts, cause loss of lives and huge economic damage each year. That is why “Water and Disaster” is chosen as the theme for World Day 2004. Now World Water Day is in its 15th year. Coping with water scarcity(缺乏) is the theme of this year’s World Water Day. The United Nations want to make people more aware of global water shortages -- a problem that is getting worse. The world now is facing a serious water shortage. Since over one billion people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water. In India’s capital, New Delhi, millions do not have any running water.? Even in more rich neighborhoods, young and old wait hours then scramble for trucked-in supplies that are not very clean. One young woman in Ghana, like many in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere walk kilometers for water.? “I have to collect for my family five times a day.” The United
