Nicole and Sarah (NS) were students from Kent State University, the USA. They came to Shanghai for a week to complete their news reporting project. Joe and Tony(JT), Chinese students from Shanghai International Studies University, were designated to help NS with their work in Shanghai. * According to the schedule, they would visit ICS studio one day. NS asked JT to meet in their hotel. * However, due to the traffic jam, JT couldnt arrive on time. So they phoned NS to show their apology and promised to arrive in five minutes. * Fifteen minutes later, when JT rushed to the hotel, they failed to find NS. So they anxiously phoned NS again. * NS told them peacefully on the phone that they went to the studio on their own ten minutes ago and didnt need their assistance any more. * They showed no sign of apology and JT felt they were fooled and insulted. * American people live in the culture of a monochronic time (M-time) orientation. In that culture, time is thought of as almost physical, like something you can touch and hold in your hand. Time is treated like money. People talk of saving, spending, wasting, and losing time. In most M-time cultures, activities are carefully planned and organized. ? Hence, JTs lateness would break down NS plan and result in a series of breaches on the schedule. Moreover, NS thought time was something can be measured which was a concrete concept. So when JT told them they would arrive in five minutes, NS believed that they would come in exactly 300 seconds. ? But Chinese have less so-called physical concept of time. They live in the culture which close to the polychronic time (P-time) orientation. They see time as much less tangible. ? When JT promised to arrive in five minutes, they just indicated they would come soon. They had never calculated the exact period of time they would spend on the way and just provided abstract concept of time.
