2. Enable the student to understand the text better.
3. Let the students have strong will and determination by the passage.
Ⅲ Teaching contents: Unit 17 Great women
Learn and master the following words and phrases
1. Words: mile, Antarctic, threaten, optimistic, climate
2. Phrases: be about to do 即将,正要做某事 around the corner 很近 struggle through 艰难地渡过die down(风)渐息at the top of one’s voice以最大的嗓音
rammar:subject-verb Agreement
Singular nouns are used with singular verbs. Plural nouns are used with plural verbs; for collective nouns, if the noun refers to the unit as a whole, the verb is singular, if it refers to the individual members of a unit, the unit is plural.
Ⅳ Teaching aids: a map of the world, blackboard, chalk
ⅤTeaching procedures:
Step 1 Greeting. (1mins)
Greet the students as usual.
Step 2 Warming up: ask questions (5mins)
1 Do you like travelling? Where do you like to travel best? How will you travel?
2. What will you do to celebrate your 60th birthday?
3. Why do polar bears never eat penguins?
Step 3 Fast – reading (7mins)
Ask the students to read the text quickly, find the answers to these three questions.
1 How did the writer celebrate her 60th birthday?
2 When was the writers 60th birthday?
3 Why did she say it was an experience she would never forget and would value for the rest of her life?
Step 4 Careful-reading (18mins)
Ask students to read the text carefully and finish three tasks:
1. Finish Exercise 1 of post-reading on page 32
2. Do some T/F exercises
1). She celebrated her fiftieth birthday by traveling alone to the South Pole.
2). Everything went all right during the first few days.
3). She had an accident after her birthday.
4). It was all her training that helped her out of danger.
