(AO) The building represents the client’s effort to show, in OPPOSITE PAGE: Site plan. practical and replicable terms, how the intelligent in- tegration of energy effi ciency and renewable energy production can provide a high standard of service and comfort in an offi ce facility in the Northeast, while simultaneously addressing the carbon- related conse- quences of our lifestyle. The building’s systems, sit- ing, and orientation all draw upon the natural energy fl ows of the sun, earth, and wind, while integrated de- sign strategies allow the building to begin operations with dramatically reduced energy consumption—up to 60 percent below energy code. The building uses 2 2 about 50 kWh/m /yr (16 kBtu/ft /yr), which is the best of its class in the Department of Energy’s High Performance Buildings database. The facility is com- fortable and spacious, and staff and visitors are par- ticularly aware of the prevalence and high quality of the daylighting. The client group made a very intelligent decision that by some counts appeared to go against conven- tional wisdom. Careful analysis with the design team suggested that manual rather than highly automated lighting and temperature controls would encourage the participation of the people in the building and would allow human comfort to be the determining factor for settings.
