Revision is a thinking process Looking at your writing with a “fresh eye” Rethinking what you have written and asking yourself questions about its effectiveness Making important decisions about the best ways to focus, organize, develop, clarify, and emphasize your ideas When does revision occur? Before drafting, during drafting, between parts of drafts, and the end of drafts Revise a word, a sentence, a paragraph, or an entire essay Misconceptions about revision Revision occurs throughout the writing process Revision is not limited to editing or proofreading Revision is not punishment A revision process for your drafts 1 rethinking purpose and thesis 2 rethinking ideas and evidence 3 rethinking organization 4 rethinking clarity and style 5 edit grammar, punctuation and spelling 6 proofreading entire essay Don’t try to look at all the parts of your paper, from ideas to organization to mechanics, at the same time. One item at a time Look closely at the evidence Learn to distinguish fact from opinion Support your opinions with evidence Evaluate the strength of your evidence Use enough specific supporting evidence 3. Revising for organization 1). Are my major points ordered in a logical, easy-to-follow pattern? Would readers understand my thinking better if certain paragraphs or major ideas were rearranged? Added? Divided? Omitted? Expanded? 2). Are my majors points presented in topic sentences that state each important idea clearly and specifically? 3). Is there a smooth flow between my major ideas? Between paragraphs? Within paragraphs? Have I used enough transitional devices to guide the reader along? 4). Are any parts of my essay out of proportion? Too long or too brief to do their job effectively? 5). Does my title and lead-in draw readers into the essay and toward my thesis? 6). Does my conclusion end my discussion thoughtf
