* * Application: Mill scale/cooling water from the continuous casting process (steel mills) and at hot rolling mills. General: During the production of steel, large quantities of mill scale are generated. Waste with mill scale is a highly abrasive medium to pump and may cause severe wear problems. Location: At the continuous casting machine and at the rolling mill. Description: Water is used to cool the steel and to flush the waste produced at the process. Due to the large water quantities needed, a recycling system is used to minimise the water consumption. The water contains highly abrasive particles (mill scale). The fluid steel is brought from the converter to the continuous casting machine, where it is poured continuously into a bottomless mould. Due to the high temperature, the mould has to be cooled with water. The molten metal solidifies and is guided downwards, by a series of rollers, while it continues to be cooled with water. Beneath the roller housing there are normally several sumps collecting the cooling water. The water, containing the mill scale flows down into a flute and is flushed down to the scale pit. The overflow water from the scale pit is pumped back into the process. Traditionally the scale pit is emptied with the use of a clamshell bucket. If this is done during full production, it will disturb the settling process in the scale pit, causing coarser solids to remain in suspension and thus being pumped back into the process. This is causing serious wear problems on pumps and nozzles. At a rolling mill the solids also increase the roller wear. Submersible pumps can be used to continuously empty the scale pit, saving time and costs. The pumps should preferably be installed suspended over the pit bottom making it possible for the pump to move within a certain area. As the pumps are moving around, they will keep a larger area free from sediments build up. An agitator should be used to keep a larger area around the pump clean. The mill sc
