TOEFL Vocabulary -- Wing Chou Decided to take TOEFL? You won’t be going too far without a reasonably large range of vocabularies. So how far is “too far”, how many vocabs do I need? For 高考, you will need about 4,500. For 4级, you will need about 4,000. (for some mysterious reason) For 6级, you will need about 5,500. For IELTS, you will need about 7,000. So what about TOEFL… The answer is … unfortunately… 10,000. If you master 10,000 words, then: 80 分 是没问题的 90 分 是有可能的 100 分 也不是不可能的 110 分 也是可追求的 And just in a few years time, you will be doing GMAT or GRE, which means… Yes! 20,000 vocabularies at least!! What do I do if I know a lot of words but damn, the one in the question isn’t one of them? 如果我已经背了很多单词, 很了不起了, 但是, damn, 考试问题里面的那个单词我还是不会, 那该怎么办呢? Guess it!! How the hell am I supposed to guess the meaning of a strange word? There are only three ways: Pure luck. (although extremely unlikely) Word formation. (somewhat helpful) Context. (most helpful and in many cases, it’s your only chance) And yes, every word has a root, or an origin. Even letters have their origins… Letter A – why is it the first letter?? Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the other 25 letters… T_T||| That’s okey! You are not required to know all the words and roots. (but yes you do need to know all the letters) You are only required to know……as many as you can. Whatever tips or techniques I tell you in this class, they may or may not be helpful, it really depends. Except for this tip: keep practicing, keep digging, everyday!!
