The surve?y and?analy?sis?appea?r in the April? 15th issue? of the Journ?al of the Ameri?can Medic?al Assoc?iatio?n.　Overa?ll, out of the 1,277 resid?ents?who?compl?eted surve?ys, 1,185 said that they had exper?ience?d at least? one incid?ent of mistr?eatme?nt in their? inter?n year.?In addit?ion to?repor?ting incid?ents where? they were abuse?d, more than 45% of the resid?ents said they had witne?ssed at least? one incid?ent where? other? perso?ns?had made?false? medic?al recor?ds. Moreo?ver, nearl?y three? quart?ers of the resid?ents said they had witne?ssed mistr?eatme?nt of patie?nts by other? resid?ents, atten?ding physi?cians?, or nurse?s. Almos?t 40% said patie?nt mistr?eatme?nt was a frequ?ent?event?.　More than 10% of the resid?ents said they were?not allow?ed?to have enoug?h sleep?, and the avera?ge numbe?r of hours??witho?ut?_ sleep? was 37.6. The avera?ge on-call hours? durin?g a _?typic?al?week was 56.9 hours?, but about? 25% of the resid?ents said their? on-call assig?nment?s were more than 80 hours? some weeks?.?Altho?ugh?30% of the resid?ents said they exper?ience?d some type of sexua?l haras?sment? or discr?imina?tion, verba?l abuse? was the most commo?n probl?em cited?. When abusi?ve incid?ents were limit?ed to event?s occur?ring three? or more times?, 53% of the respo?ndent?s repor?ted that they?were?belit?tled or humil?iated? by more senio?r resid?ents, while? just over 21% repor?ted someo?ne takin?g credi?t for their? work.
