Amongthem, In 1980, one of the most prestigiousscholarHofstedeascertainsfivepairsofdimensions(powerdistance, uncertaintyavoidance,masculinityvs.femininity,individualismvs.collectivism andlong-shorttermorientation)alongwhichthedominantvaluesystemsin differentcountriescanbearrayed.Thesedimensionsareacceptedfarandwide andhavebeenusedbyagreatnumberofresearcherstointerpretandcompare culturalgroups.Inthisthesis,valueorientationisthesubject.And among thefivedimensions above,theauthorchoosesindividualismvs. collectivismandpowerdistanceasthe twoperspectivestostudy.Byadoptingthemethodofcasestudy,theauthorselects thetwomostprestigiousmythsineasternandwesterncultures–AJourneytothe WestbyWuCheng’enandIlliadbyHomerasthematerialsourceforthe contrastivestudyofvalueorientationsembodiedinthecharacterizationsofthe mainheroes,SunWukong andAchillesinthesetwomythologies.Throughoutthewholethesis,theauthortriestoidentifywherethetwoheroesstand,individualismorcollectivism,orinbetween?Ontheotherhand,theauthor intendstoexaminewhetherHofstede’stheoryisimpeccablyright.Theconclusion isthatSunWukongisabi-culturalfigure,whoisbornindividualisticallyand boaststhespiritofanti-authorityandcounter-traditionatfirs
