Functional Equivalence and Business English TranslationI. IntroductionBusiness English, a branch of ESP (English for Special Purpose), began to be studied about 20 years ago. The English involved in various fields in commercial activities, such as technology transfer, foreign trade, the introduction of foreign investment, international financing, transnational tourism, international transportation, is as a whole called business English. With the development of globalization of world economy, economical exchanges have been becoming more and more frequent. English has become an indispensable linguistic communication means in the world economic field. Therefore business English becomes more and more important. And the translation of business English is becoming more and more important. Many scholars have been devoted to study business English both at home and abroad.In China, there are many researches have been done on business English translation, and leave lots of research works, including Xiao Manjun’s “Correct Understanding and Choice of Word Meaning and Business English Translation”, ZhangYong’s“OnCorrectUnderstanding of LexicalMeanings, Zhou Liren’s “Application of Dynamic Equivalence in Business English Translation”, Liu Fagong’s “Exploring into the Principles of Chinese-English Business Translation” and Liao Ying’s “English For International Business---Theory, Language and Practice” and so on. In liao’s research work, Liao has summarized l3 features of business contracts and he holds that international business practical writings should be written on seven Cs (completeness, clearness, concreteness, conciseness, courtesy, consideration and correctness).Among the foreign researchers, Eugene A.Nida’s theory “functional equivalence” has exerted a great influence on Chinese translation field. He proposed the “dynamic equivalence” in translating the Bible and made it successful. And then, in the book From One Language to Another, Nida beginsto use the term “function
