The first DW appliance came from Netezza. We now have many vendors jumping into the fray. There are hardware and software configured DW appliance vendors such as: IBM Balanced Warehouse Sun (combined with GreenPlum) HP NeoView DATAllegro Calpont Etc. And there are software-only DW appliance vendors that must rely on hardware vendors to complete offering like: InfoBright GreenPlum ParAccel Dataupia Etc. And there are BI appliance vendors that offer a BI application preconfigured so that all you need to do is add your data. Examples are: Cognos LucidEra Xactly Corda CRM analytic vendors Etc. We are now starting to see a combination of DW appliances with BI application vendors – for example, Business Objects and Netezza offering a preconfigured BI app on the Netezza box. The appliance vendors must overcome an IT department’s reluctance to use “non-standard” components. Again it is a sense that the IT folks have lost control over their environments. Also the appliance vendor must prove that its products are non-disruptive to the existing infrastructure and that data can flow as easily out of the appliance as it can into it. It seems like an ideal combination – the horsepower and scalability from the data warehouse appliance vendors with the flexibility and multi-tenancy needs of the SaaS vendor. Column-based databases store and access data very differently. As the name implies, these technologies store data vertically in table columns rather than in horizontal rows. Why is this important? By putting similar data together, column-based databases reduce the time to read the disk. This becomes a major factor when executing large-scale queries such as those typically done in a BI environment – a significant advantage over traditional databases. By storing the data in this fashion, only the data related to a specific query is accessed – all other columns are eliminated from the query.
