Chapter 1. Introduction The words Computer Ethics may sometimes evoke the quip: Computer Ethics…isnt that an oxymoron? Indeed, the computer has received a great deal of bad press over the years because of its association with things like spam, fraud, and impersonalization, but the computer is not to blame for these things. Chapter 3 will allow you to identify your own philosophic worldview. First you will complete the Ross-Barger Philosophic Inventory. Then you will interpret its results and learn how the inventory was formulated and validated. Chapter 4 will give you a systems approach to ethics. Here you will study the philosophies of Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, Existentialism, and Logical Analysis. Chapter 5 will consider some additional philosophical outlooks that affect ethics. These include Eclecticism, Historicism, Scientism, Nihilism, and Postmodernism. Chapter 6 will provide a framework for making ethical decisions that you can use in solving computer ethics cases. This book will take a case-based approach to computer ethics. Most of the cases that we will use have arisen out of the experience of several computer
