You will need a prospect research strategy. This will be lead by The overall fundraising strategy The resources and budget available to you. Different organisations will have different fundraising strategies and hence different research strategies, so you will need to tailor the following to your own individual situation. Prospect Identification The following are easily measurable variables. The number of new prospects that you identify each month. This itself can be split into several parts: New prospects from your database/alumni. New prospects from those with no previous connection with your organisation. New individuals. New Trusts. You can further categorise these new prospects by source (e.g. major donors to other similar institutions, prospects obtained from news alerts, prospects obtained from your fundraisers, directors, trustees, etc. Do not think for one moment that you must be the source of all new prospects – this is very much a task that you should encourage in others.)
