1.0 INTRODUCTION Walter Schoel Engineering Company, Inc. and U.S. Steel propose to site and construct a multi-use development consisting of commerical and retail facilities and an apartment complex on the south bank of the Cahaba River near the community of Leeds in Jefferson County, Alabama. Barry A. Vittor Associates, Inc. was contracted through Walter Schoel Engineering to perform field surveys for federally protected freshwater mussel species along a 4,500-foot reach of the Cahaba River fronting the property. This effort was conducted at the request of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as part of the federal permitting process associated with continued development of commerical and retail facilities for the Grand River Development Project and also the development of a proposed apartment complex. 2.0 METHODOLOGY 2.1 Study Site (Location and Description) The project site is located in Jefferson County, Alabama near the community of Leeds (Figures 1 and 2). Specifically, the proposed activities would take place in Sections 12 and 14 of Township 17 South and Range 1 West. Latitude/Longitude coordinates for the approximate center of the property are: 33.548382o North and 86.604390 West. The study area currently consists of two parcels. The eastern parcel is 130 acres and is bordered by the Shops of Grand River on its eastern boundary. The western parcel is 51 acres in size. These two parcels are primarily undeveloped and forested. A transmission line corridor bisects the two parcels. 2.2 Stream Descriptions and Photo-documentation Fifty-five photographs were taken at thirty-two locations illustrating the various stream conditions found on the property (Table A1, Figures A1 A2; Appendix A). These are presented to provide supporting documentation on their potential habitat suitability for freshwater mollusk species and protected aquatic species.
