He thrives on the energy of New York, his work at an elite firm, and his budding relationship. For a time, it seems that nothing will stand in the way of his meteoric rise to success. But in the wake of September 11, Changez finds his relationship crumbling and his exalted status overturned. Allegiances are subsequently unearthed, proving themselves more fundamental than money, power and maybe even love. On some level I understand that it is supposed to be an observation of how opinions changed after 9/11, but I just didn’t get it. The narrator was nice, and that made it a pleasant easy read, but I cant say much more than that. I found the ending extremely abrupt, almost checking my machine to make sure it was still working, it was only the RNIB announcement that allowed me to realise the story had actually finished. I feel like this book should have affected me more, and am left feeling more bothered by my lack of emotion for the tale, than by the tale itself. Review An unusual subject and an unusual style of writing. This book will certainly catch and hold your attention but I was well into the second chapter before I came to terms with the style of writing which, for reasons which will eventually become clear, the writer chooses not to reveal the identity of the second person in the conversation.
