Field Experience Department of Social Work California State University, Bakersfield Why Do We Have Field Experience? Social Work is a practice profession. Unlike a master’s degree in English or History, obtaining a Master’s in Social Work Requires the application of knowledge, skills, and values in real life settings. Field Education gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills, and values that they learn in the classroom. It also gives the professional the opportunity to identify those students who may perform acceptably in the classroom but who cannot work effectively with clients. Social Work educators report the 80% of what social workers learn, they learn in the field. Who’s Who in Field Education There are five key players in field education. Director of Field Education is responsible for the development, administration, and coordination of the field education component of the social work curriculum. Practicum Seminar Instructor teaches the weekly seminar and serves as the Faculty Liaison and in that role serves as the link between the agency and the school. Field Instructor is the MSW who takes professional responsibility for and supervises the work of the student in the field agency. Task Supervisor or Preceptor is an agency employee who does not have an MSW but who accepts responsibility for a portion of the student’s field education. Student is an adult learner who has declared a commitment to learning to apply the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become a professional social worker. Field Instructors as Teachers and Gatekeepers Field Instructors are both teachers and gatekeepers. Field instructors help students integrate classroom learning with practice in the field. Students take courses in human behavior in the social environment, social policy, social work practice, and research.
