ANNUAL TA CONFERENCE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2009 Active Reading: Moving Beyond Skimming and Highlighting How do you typically approach reading? Take a few minutes to jot down some ideas. Keep in mind the range and type of material you may read. Turn to a peer and compare your approaches? Describe and explain why you take these approaches. How are they different? Similar? What’s the value of each? How effective are they? Share your approaches with the group! What DON’T we tend to do! Are you guilty? read to understand the basic thesis of article read to identify and understand basic concepts read to identify and evaluate evidence read with a view of taking a position as opposed to an opinion What does active reading entail? Look like? reading with purpose! interrogating the text! asking questions interrogate the content! perspective-taking | forecasting | positioning assessing for bias (what’s stated/not stated?) drawing relationships w/in b/w issues/topics/concepts anchoring your understanding with examples / evidence documenting your understanding (e.g., concept maps, summarized notes, tables/charts/diagrams) NOT to get through the readings! How do we do it? Two approaches Articles – a critical approach Textbooks – PQ4R Getting Started: Approach #1 What is the TOPIC? What is the ISSUE? What is the POSITION of the author? What EVIDENCE does he/she offer? What is the QUALITY of that evidence?
