France is the largest user of nuclear power in the world, with over 75% of the country’s needs provided by nuclear energy. Lithuania is the second largest user, with over 73% of the country’s electrical needs provided by nuclear power. There are 69 operating pressurized water reactors (PWR) and 35 operating boiling water reactors (BWR) in the USA. Each generates about 1000 megawatts of electricity when operating. In the world their are over 500 power reactors of different designs and powers. There are approximately 36 operating non-power reactors, located in 23 states that are licensed for the academic use of nuclear material in the United States. These reactors do not provide power, but are used either for education and research, or support of the U.S. weapons program, respectively. Pass simulated uranium fuel pellet sample around the room. Fission is a process in which very heavy atoms, such as uranium and plutonium, after “absorbing” a neutron becomes so unstable that they literally split into two pieces accompanied by a large release of energy. The energy released per fission is approximately 200 MeV (megaelectronvolts), equivalent to about 3.2x10-11 J of energy, (a very small number). However this energy release is o
