By reviewing a large amount of materials in this field, the author finds that gender, career orientation, beliefs about language learning, language proficiency level and learners’ motivation are the most important factors influencing the choice of learning strategies. Introduction   Factors affecting the choice of learning strategies is a topic attracted much attention from linguists in the field of second language acquisition. After years of efforts, linguists in this field indeed have confirmed the influence of some factors in the choice of learning strategies.      2. Factors Influencing Learning Strategy Use   2.1.Gender   By comparing with the other 15 factors affecting the choice of learning strategies, Oxford (1989) claimed gender to have more influence on learning strategy choosing. Findings of his research show that female learners use more strategies than male in the learning process. This is echoed by others in many studies in this field (Politzer, 1983; Green 1991; Green Oxford, 1993; Oxford, 1993a, 1993b; Oxford Nyiko, 1989; Oxford, Ehrman Nyikos,1988; Oxford, Park-Oh, Ito Sumrall, 1993a, 1993b)   2.2.Career Orientation   Career orientation is a factor significantly affecting the choice of learning strategies, which has been confirmed in many studies (Oxford, 1989b). Politzer and McGroarty (1985: 103-124) found there was a difference in learning strategy use between students majoring in engineering/science and those in social science/humanities. Politzer and McGroarty’s finding is in accordance with the discovery in Chang’s(1991) study, in which he maintained that learners in social science majors used lear
