On Packing In international trade, packing of goods is a kind of promotion and also a form of protection to reduce the risk of goods being damaged or missing during transit. There are two kinds of packing: A. Large packing/Outer packing i.e. packing for transportation. B. Small packing/Inner packing i.e. sales packing. Packing Marks There are four types of packing marks used on export package. 1. Shipping mark Shipping mark is a mark to identify the goods or cargoes so that goods can be identified easily and faster. It is composed of a specific geometric figure, abbreviations or initials of consignee, the port of destination and the package number. 2. Indicative mark Indicative mark give special instructions regarding manner of handling, loading lifting etc. For example: This Side Up Keep Upright Handle with Care Use no Hooks Keep in a dry place Keep away from heat 3. Warning mark/dangerous cargo mark Since some cargoes might be harmful to people’s health, warning marks can remind both dockers and container-openers that any improper handling may endanger their lives. Sometimes, warning marks are composed of pictures and phrases on the outer packing by the seller as per some dangerous characteristics such as inflammable, explosive, poisonous, corrosive, radioactive, etc.
