中英課程簡介 Freshman English F, R (4 credits each semester) This is an integrated English training course of four basic skills--listening, speaking, reading and writing--with the latter two especially emphasized. The reading materials are taken from some recent British and American writers’ and are for either intensive or extensive reading. The selected articles are arranged from simple to difficult, with a gradual increase in extensive reading. Students are required to prepare lessons in advance, to take notes, to discuss related issues in class, and then to turn in a written report of their discussion. Also, instructors will mainly use English when giving class lectures or conducting discussions so that students have more opportunities to here and use English. Guided Writing F, R (1 credit each semester) The course objective is to equip students with various means to develop and clarify a particular topic and eventually enable them to write a “paragraph” that is unified and coherent. Near the end of the second semester, one month will be reserved for “composition” writing. The textbook used is “Paragraph Development” by Arnaudet and Barrett. In addition to explanation and discussion of the text, class activities also include “Read and Write,” “Dicto-comp,” and “Free Writing.” In “Read and Write,” students are asked to read a short passage, formulate questions on the main points of the passage, and finally write a paragraph based on the answers to the questions. In ”Dicto-comp,“ students first listen to a simple and interesting story two or three times, and then rewrite the story according to the questions raised by the instructor. In ”Free Writing,“ students are asked to write narrative and descriptive paragraphs on topics with which they are familiar.After each writing exercise, detailed group discussion or individual guidance is provided with respect to errors on grammar, rhetoric, and organization, so as to acquaint students with writing techniques and gradually i
