The construction of overpasses undoubtedly becomes an effective way of relieving traffic congestion by transforming the simple plane transportation into a more efficient three dimensional municipal transportation system. Overpasses, a product of the modern city with its unique urban spatial form, combines urban transport and plays an active role at the same time to bring the city a new form of space - overpass bridge space, the newly created space under the bridge. As a new form of urban space, the construction of road overpasses inevitably changes the urban spatial form of the original area. It also has a strong influence on the surrounding urban space and landscape environment. Therefore, better understanding of the relationship between urban space and overpass bridge space, better designing and usage of the overpass bridge space can enhance the city characteristics effectively. This is what this thesis aims to address and explore.In this thesis, the design and space utilization of urban downtown overpasses is studied on the basis of the published research results. The concept of overpass bridge space is introduced and applied for the analysis of the space utilization of the No.2 Ring Road overpasses in Xian. Recommendations and strategies are proposed to solve the issues related to the design and utilization of the urban overpass bridge space based on the above case study. This thesis begins with an introduction including questions about the design and use of urban overpass bridge space, followed by the definition of the scope and the expected achievements from this study.
