Lecture 6 Writing the paper (Ⅰ) Thesis Statement Outline 6.1 Developing A Thesis Statement Definition? What is a TS? A TS is usually a single sentence formulating both the topic and the point of view of a paper. (Chapter 2) A thesis statement declares the main point or controlling idea of an essay. It is a scholarly statement that needs to be proven or maintained against argument. What should be considered when developing a TS? 2 factors the purpose of the paper the audience 6.1.1 Some questions helping in deciding on a TS Purpose: What purpose will you try to achieve in the paper? Do you want to describe sth, explain sth, argue for a certain point of view, or persuade your audience to think or do sth? Audience: What audience are you waiting for? Is your reader a specialist on the subject? Is someone likely to agree with you? Someone likely to be interested or uninterested in the subject? 6.1.2 Try to say “yes” to each of the following questions (criteria for an effective TS) Criteria for an effective TS Does it express your position in a full, declarative sentence, which is not a question, not a statement of purpose, and not merely a topic? Does it limit the subject to a narrow focus that grows out of research? Does it establish an investigative, inventive edge to the discovery, interpretation, or theoretical presentation?
