I I Abstract In most cases，paper, pen, ink and other necessary materials for writing are deficient in Dunhuang during Tang and Song dynasties. Therefore, most of the books they have copied are useful to their life. From this point of view, historical manuscripts of Dunhuang books that handed down should also have their specific use and reasons of copying. After observing the copying manners and contents of these historical manuscripts, as well as thoroughly taking into consideration the social and historical background at that time, we conclude that reasons of copying these historical manuscripts are mainly related to the monk’s general reading, preaching, singing activities and the local temple schools’ educational activities. The specific chapters are as follows: Historical manuscript, monk’s reading and preaching activities. Based on the historical records, the first section demonstrates the tradition of reading historical books of the eminent and famous monks in the history, aiming to state that reading historical books were one of the required readings of monks to improve their cultivation. The second section is mainly on the basis of historical allusions and stories from Sutras to prove that history books is one of the required readings of preaching monks.
