COURSE LEVEL: Optional course for the BSc and MSc levels . NUMBER OF ECTS: 10 APPROVED: Approval by the Study Board on 8 March 2005 and 30 June 2005 SEMESTER FOR WHICH THE COURSE HAS BEEN APPROVED: Spring 2005. REPLACES COURSE DESCRIPTION DATED: 19 Oct. 2004 INTERVALS AT WHICH THE COURSE IS OFFERED: see course plan. FILLED IN BY: Kristin J. Kleinjans. LECTURER: Kristin J. Kleinjans. TEACHING LANGUAGE: English. FORM OF ASSESSMENT: In-class presentation (20 minutes) with a weight of 25% and written final exam (3 hours) with a weight of 75%. (The re-exam in August will be oral.) EXAMINATION AIDS ALLOWED: English-Danish and Danish-English Dictionary as well as other language dictionaries (such as French-Danish). NUMBER OF HOURS PER WEEK: 4 lectures per week for 12 weeks. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course gives an introduction into some the most important issues in the economics of pension finance. The course is equally divided into two parts: basic issues of pension finance and advanced topics in funded pension schemes.The first part opens with an introduction to the rationale for government intervention and basic economic theory about savings behavior for old-age. We willthen discuss evidence about how many resources individuals need in retirement and if individuals appear to be under saving. We then compare the two main pension insurance schemes, unfunded and funded schemes, and discuss the impacts of these sche mes through three lenses: macroecononomic considerations , microeconomic considerations , and how these schemes cope with the demographic transition.
