Abstract With the developing of the societys productivity and industrialization, urbanization has been reaching the process of acceleration in our country. As a natural spatial embodiment of the social development, the urbanization is characterized not only by the change of countrymen into city residences, but the expansion of cities, and the conversion of the agricultural fields into urban lands. The only way is the land acquisition that the collective land of our country is gained when being changed into state-run land. Land expropriation is the administrative action that the governments obtain other civil man’s land in force for public interests. Land expropriation is a kind of land policy widely adopted by many countries in the world. The current land expropriation policy in China was formed in planned economy, which, at that time, exerted positive effects on the national economy. However, with the development of socialist market economy, its internal and external drawbacks gradually came out in the wash. Social contradictions resulting from land expropriation have occurred, especially those serious problems in terms of decreasing living standards and unemployment of the farmers, which affected the long-term stability of the society and eventually hindered the establishment of a harmonious society. Therefore, it is commonly acknowledged that reforming the current land expropriation system is of desperate necessity. Meanwhile those are imminent tasks like studying, exploring and establishing a new land expropriation system which is suit to the new situation of our country. Following the review and reflections on the development of Chinese land expropriation system after the foundation of China ， this paper further discussed the policy framework and characteristic of the current system, laying emphasis on its main drawbacks and exploring the policy causes for these drawbacks.
