A drought severity index is the foundation ofmonitoring droughtdisaster. . In order to develop ameteorological drought severity index that considers meteorological factors more comprehensivly and is comparable in space and tmi e, a furthermodifiedmeteorologicaldroughtseveritymodel forGansu LoessPlateauwas developed on the basis of fundamentals and method of the PalmerDrought Severity ode.l Stations, calculation of potential evapotranspiration and runoff, etc. were revised in thismodel. Themonthlymeteorological indexwas com- puted at20 representative stations from 1961 to 2000 by using themodified meteorological drought severity model forGansu Loess Plateau, and the computed drought indexwas comparedw ith the recorded drought situation. The re- sult shows that the computed drought seveirty value is coincidentw ith the practical
